Hong Kong Museum of Art

The Hong Kong Museum of Art contains some of the world's finest collections of ancient Chinese art from the Han to the Ming and Qing dynasties including Chinese painting, calligraphy. It houses few hundreds of oil paintings, drawings, etchings and lithographs of old Hong Kong.

Open from Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays to Sundays: 10am - 6pm and closed on Thursdays (except Public Holidays) & the first two days of the Chinese New Year. It will close at 5pm on Christmas Eve & Chinese New Year's Eve

How to go: Take MTR to Tsim Sha Tsui Station B2 or C1Exit. Or Take Star Ferry from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui, just right next to the Clock Tower.

Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware

Flagstaff House, which was completed in 1846, was originally the home of the Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces, and is now becoming the Hong Kong's oldest surviving colonial building.

In 1984, it was converted to be the Museum of Tea Ware. This specializes in housing, studying and displaying tea wares, seals and tea-drinking customs of various dynasties. Click here to see tea wares collection. This holds regular demonstrations and lecture programmes for promoting Chinese tea drinking culture.

An extension of a new wing built in 1995 is called K.S. Lo Gallery. This displays rare collection of ceramics and Chinese seals.

Open from Tuesdays to Sundays: 10am - 5pm, but closed on Mondays, Christmas and Boxing Day, New Year's Day and the first three days of the Chinese New Year.

Location: 10 Cotton Tree Drive, Hong Kong Park, Central, Hong Kong.

How to go: Take MTR to Admiralty Station (Pacific Place exit) and then follow signs to "Hong Kong Park / Island Shangri-La Hotel". The park is opposite to upper mall entrance on the right hand side. The museum is just one minute walk from the entrance of the Park.

It is Free Admission. Closed on Tuesdays.

Hong Kong Arts Centre Pao Galleries

The Pao Galleries are wonderful showcases for contemporary art. These regularly display works from major international artists but also feature exhibitions of paintings, photography, crafts and design produced by local Hong Kong artists.

Open Daily from 10am - 8pm and closed only at Chinese New Year Holidays

Location: 4 -5 Floors, No 2 Harbour Road, Wan Chai, HK

How to go: Take MTR to Wan Chai Station C exit and walk 10 minutes via the footbridge to Immigration Tower and walk to Harbour Road turn left. You can also get off at MTR Admiralty Station E2 Exit and then walk through the Harcourt Garden and take the footbridge to Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and turn right for 2 minutes walk.

It is Free Admission.

Hong Kong Museum of History

This museum occupies over 188,000 square feet, with 86,000 square feet being used for exhibitions, including a special exhibition gallery for thematic shows. The permanent exhibition here outline the 6,000 years of Hong Kong's history.

It presents the great efforts from many people in collecting, conserving, processing, studying and displaying cultural objects which are related to the archaeology, history, ethnography and natural history of Hong Kong and South China.

It outlines the natural environment, folk culture and historical development of Hong Kong in a life-like manner starting from the 400 million years ago to the return of sovereignty of the territory to China in 1997.

Hong Kong Heritage Museum

It preserves Hong Kong's history, arts and cultural heritage, aiming to highlight Hong Kong's arts identity. It contains several galleries that devoted to various aspects of Hong Kong and Chinese cultures. The Hong Kong Community Art Gallery exhibits art works by non-professional artists such as students, the handicapped and senior citizens. The Cantonese Opera Heritage Hall preserves the history and performance of Cantonese Opera by showing the dressing table, the stage performance apparels, costumes and accessories. The Chao Shao-an Gallery displays Chinese contemporary paintings. Dr . T.T.Tsui Gallery of Chinese Arts contains ancient Chinese bronzes, ceramics and pottery from different dynasties including some Tibetan Buddha statues. The Eight Time Tunnels in the New Territories Heritage Hall leads you through the 6,000-years history and development of the New Territories. Theme galleries showcase a wide variety of artistic styles including traditional Chinese wood block prints, Hong Kong comics, advertising old posters, glass bottles, etc.

Hong Kong Space Museum

It was opened to public in 1980 and was the oldest among all the others. The planetarium at its Spare Theatre was also the first and one of the largest planetarium in the world to possess a fully automated control system with the first Omnimax film projectors in the eastern hemisphere.

Hong Kong Science Museum

The Science Museum contains over 500 interesting exhibits, 60 percent of which covers a great variety of science-related subjects. The exhibition has many areas of science and technology, including robotics, transportation, virtual reality and many others. The 65-foot-high Energy Machine is the focus in this Museum. This, when activiated, produces spectacular audiovisual effects which demonstrates different forms of energy. The "Whodunit? Mystery at Menagerie Park", a new highly participating exhibition focusing on forensic science, does not only attract students but also adult because of its uniqueness. This role play exhibition demonstrate how the forensic scientists solve crime cases in ancient China. It is both educational and interesting.

Museum Shuttle

The most convenient way to visit all of the above museums in Kowloon side including the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin is the Museum Shuttle. Weekly pass is also available. The Shuttle operates from 10:00am until 6:45pm every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. During the journey you can also hear a taped commentary in English about the museums and also the sights along the way. You can board from any of the above four museums in Tsim Sha Tsui and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin. A weekly pass cost HK$60 (USD8) is available at the Hong Kong Tourism Board Visitor Information and Service Centres located at the Start Ferry Concourse of Tsim Sha Tsui and Ground Floor at The Center of 99 Queen's Road Central in Central of the Hong Kong side.
