| Fortune telling at Man Mo Temple | |
| Fortune
tellers can be found in almost all temples in Hong Kong. However, most can
only speak Cantonese or some Mandarin. There is one at the Man Mo Temple
who can speak good English. If you want to know your future or how to avoid bad luck, these fortune tellers might be able to give you the answers. You can borrow a bamboo cylinder filled with chips (the answers to your questions) for free from the temple. You can shake the cylinder until the god chooses a single chip to fall. If more than one chip fall at the same time, you should put them all back and shake again. For about HK$30, these fortune tellers will interpret the significance of the chosen chip with reference to what you're seeking. However, they are very good marketing persons too. If they ask you to do a lot of additional things such as donations, think twice and just do whatever your heart is pleased to do so. Be prepared, you may hear as much bad news as good! Many elderly Chinese believe that Chinese gods will not tell the fortune of a foreigner. If so, your $30 might be better spent on buying the chip as a unique souvenir! |
