Mid-Autumn Festival
Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important Chinese festivals. In the old days (before numerous adjustments) autumn in China fell on the seventh, eighth and the nineth lunar months. So the 15th day of the eighth lunar month was precisely the middle of autumn. This year, corresponding to Western calendar, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on 1st of October.

Celebration of this festival was originated from the harvest time that came roughly around the middle of autumn. During this time, farmers finished gathering their crops from the farm and fruits from the orchards. It was also at this time of the year that they could relax and get together with their family to celebrate the good harvest of the year. Besides, the full month on the 15th of each lunar month also symbolizes reunion. So all the family members would come home for this festival of reunion.

After dinner, many people like to go out to attend some special performances in parks or public open spaces. At Victoria Park in Causeway Bay, the biggest public park on Hong Kong Island, open concerts will be organised. There will be small booths opened for business just for this occasion. Children will display their lanterns and run around all night.

It is also said that the full moons on Moon Festivals were the biggest and roundest. Therefore, Victoria Park (and most other parks in Hong Kong) would be filled with romantic couples till early next morning. Our government is considerate enough to declare the 16th (the following day) a public holiday.
