| Repulse Bay |
|
Summer in Hong Kong is extremely hot. In recent years, the summer season is becoming longer and starting earlier. July and August are the usual months for summer time. There are lots of beautiful beaches scattered along the southern coast of Hong Kong Island. The most popular beach is Repulse Bay. Some foreigners call it Hong Kong WaiKiKi because it is as busy and beautiful as Waikiki. It is the longest beach in Hong Kong Island, attracting up to 30 000 people during summer weekends. If you find it too crowded, you can walk south to Middle Bay or South Bay or even go to the another big beach called Deep Water Bay. |

There is a famous seafood restaurant serving barbecue and Chinese seafood cuisine just beside the beach. Wonderful beach view is free. There are only a few shops in the area but they provide all the necessities for water sports including big umbrellas for sun bathing. |

In the 1920s, swimming in the beach was not popular. According to the Chinese standard back then, bodies (even parts of) were not supposed to be exposed to the public especially a female one. It was unacceptable to wear swim suit. You cannot imagine that men were not allowed to take off their swimming suit for shower. They would be fined if they did. The swim suit for women had long sleeves that ensured that most parts of the body were covered. |

| In 1920, the Repulse Bay Hotel was opened and soon became the best resort hotel for foreigners to enjoy the sunshine and swimming. But at that time, there were only very primitive facilities for shower and changing clothes. The changing place was made of small huts. Further, there were also some shelters for gambling while enjoying sunshine. Some gangs and big companies operated these huts and shelters. |
| In the 70s, people gathered money to build a Tin Hau Statue and a Guanyin Statue. This Gaung Yin Statue is now becoming one the famous statues in Hong Kong and this attract foreigners. The story behind this statue involves one of the biggest drug dealers in Hong Kong's crime history. He sponsored the building of it because he wanted to appease the gods so they'll grant him safety as he plied his 'trade' on the waters of HK. Unfortunately, for this drug baron the gods did not smile upon him and he was sent to jail three years after the completion of this statue. |
