Western Market
map
You can get to the Western Market by tram and taxi. Though the tram is much more fun. The market is the western terminus and trams stopping there are clearly marked on the front. This is a market like no other in Hong Kong. Housed in one of the few old buildings to escape being knocked down in the development boom, the four story red brick Edwardian edifice dates from 1906.

In an effort to avoid the repetitiveness of most markets, the shops on the ground floor must each stock unique merchandise. You can find many different kinds of collectibles, from antiques watches to model buses and stamps.

The first floor is a "cloth alley." The shopkeepers here are very old and really know their stock. Shanghai tailors can also be found here and they are a fast disappearing breed. These tailors are known for their experience and excellent cutting. Unfortunately, few have found an apprentice to pass their skills on to. On the first floor you can buy your fabric and get a garment made too. The competition here should keep the price down.

The second floor is the Treasure Inn Seafood Restaurant, open from 10.30 am to midnight. The restaurant is decorated in Old Shanghai style and they offer live Chinese Opera performances. Ring 2850 7780 for bookings. It ha just been elected as the Best Restaurant in Hong Kong by Asia Week.

The decoration of the restaurant is so Old Shanghai style that they have second floor tables overlooking the performance down below feeling like seeing formal stage performance. This is definitely one of very few restaurants in Hong Kong having old Chinese music performance. A while ago, one Chinese restaurant in Kowloon side used to have Chinese music show, have been closed.

Note:If you are interested in seeing Chinese Opera performance, please tell us the date you will visit HK and our team of reporters will try to check the schedule in advance and try to match your date of travelling to HK. If you want to know more about Chinese Opera, ask us
