Bonham Strand West (Nam Bug Hong)
In Central District towards Sheung Wan near the Western Market, you may come across a short street full of trading companies. That is the Bonham Strand West. If you look closer, there are quite a lot of "senior citizens" sitting inside those shops. Yes, these shops have been there perhaps for as far back as the Hong Kong history goes.

Since they play an active role as linking up the north and south of China through import / export trades, people called this area the "Nam Bug Hong" in Cantonese, meaning "South-North-Hong". And if you have studied a bit of modern Chinese history, you might know that Hong means "merchants". Over the years, they mainly do wholesale and retail trades on dried food and Chinese medicines.

9-8-Hong (Nine-Eight-Hong)
According to some old traders, more than 50 years ago, other trading companies would leave their merchandise to these shops on Bonham as consignments for wholesale and retail purposes. These shops would normally take 2% off the sales as commissions. 98% of the money would go back to the original traders. Therefore, they are also known as the 9-8-Hongs among traders.

However, due to gradually rising costs of running businesses in Hong Kong, these hongs on Bonham began to charge higher commissions, like 3-5%. Hence, the name 9-8-hong began to lose its meaning. Even traders began to call them by their other name, "Nam Bug Hong". Nowadays, almost no one knows that there had been such a name for this area.

Some of the shops there have been doing business for more than fifty years. Many closed down due to the demise of the shop owners and high rental for running a retail shop in Hong Kong. Among the better known "old brands", Shiu Fung Hong (¥üÂצæ) and Dai Loong Hong (¤j¶©¦æ) are famous for the canned seafood brands they carry, whereas Chiu Kwong Lee (»¯¥ú§Q) and Bak Cheong Tong (¦Ê©÷°ó) are famous for the Chinese medicines they sell, such as jinseng and pearl powders respectively.
